Watch Storage

For the pieces you aren't wearing, a vault is the safest place for them. We recommend Guardian Vaults, which operates private safe deposit boxes at two Sydney CBD locations, on Castlereagh Street and George Street.

Why we recommend Guardian

Guardian's vaults are underground, with biometric access and constant surveillance, and they hold a far steadier temperature and humidity than most homes. Boxes range from compact sizes that suit a few watches to safes for larger collections, with room for boxes and papers. Saturday access is available, and Guardian offers options to insure the contents of your box.

Box sizes and current fees are listed on Guardian's website. Storage is arranged directly with Guardian Vaults, and your agreement is with them.

A note on insurance

Home contents policies often limit cover for individual valuables. If your watches are insured at home, it's worth asking your insurer how moving them to a vault affects your cover and premium.

Preparing a watch for storage

Store each watch separately in a pouch or its own box, and keep the box and papers with it, as a complete set holds its value. Photograph each piece and record its reference and serial number. Have quartz batteries replaced or removed beforehand, since an old battery can leak. Mechanical watches don't need a winder in storage, but it's worth running them occasionally, and having a long-stored watch checked before it goes back into regular wear.
